GAP UNITED FOR PEACE
This is a special kind of Group of Action toward Peace (GAP). Its members are going to be world wide. And its actions related with different fields.
The mission of this GAP, among others, is to make this date known as the International Peace Day and promote the creation not only of the laws declaring that, but of activities to raise awareness in the general public and governments, related to Peace on Earth.
Some countries already have a law based on this document in different levels of the procedure (Some, with the law already enforced regionally, others only as a law project)
The basic idea is to make known the existence of the International Peace Day, declared such by United Nations General Assembly on 2002 and established for September 21st in a global level.
The complete week for activities of any kind will be from Monday September the 19th to Sunday September the 25th, being Wednesday the 21st the main day.
This GAP includes (Without exclusion of other future proposals) the following areas:
GOVERNMENTAL PARTICIPATION: It is important for groups in each area to contact their authorities to make them known (if they do not know yet) or to suggest the enforcement of the laws to declare Int. Day of Peace official in the area. It is important to reinforce the idea of cease of fire and violence of ANY KIND during that day and if possible during that week.
MEDIA: Invitation to promote the declaration of the Int. Peace Day and the activities to be done locally by the members of the community or the governments. Keep in mind that freedom of speech, (article # 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights) is a key point to the preservation of Peace.
PEACE BELL According with the tradition, we suggest a bell to be rung at 12 PM on SEP 21st. (Reference available). It is special for Churches, schools and any individual or institution that has a bell.
RELIGIOUS: Work from their places in activities as prayers, fasting, vigil, meditation, etc. to be each one selected by the local religious authorities and according to each group’s beliefs.
GROUPS OF SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT: Same as the suggestion for religious groups.
SPORTS: Organize events of any given proportion to promote the principles of peaceful interrelations.
EDUCATIONAL: Promote activities in schools of all levels, from march for peace, art contests, development of panels of discussion, to be determined by the teachers/ directors involved.
MEDICAL /SCIENTIFIC: Invitation to the organization of work shops, lectures, etc, promoting activities that will, from those fields, ensure the development of Peace.
ARTISTIC: Invitation to artists of every and any category to, Either as an individual or as a group, have some exhibition or execution for art Works with preference in front of Wide public or in close facilities for that week between Sep. 19th to Sep. 25th, 2005.
LEGAL: Promoting the study on the status of existing laws, (Regional and National) to declare the effectiveness of the celebration of the Sep 21st as the INT. PEACE DAY.
In some countries there have been already some clear activities on this direction (like Mexico and Argentina, available upon request). But even in those countries there is still a lot to do.
INDEPENDET GROUPS: Any group that fights against violence in any of its forms can prepare special seminars, lectures, workshops or just a media campaign to use this day to create the awareness they are seeking for.
Individuals or groups that could plan any kind of participation are welcome to contact us to: gapunitedforpeace@hotmail.com to inform or to get advice and support. They will also be able to be announced in the web that will post all the participations if they choose to do so.

UNITY begins with us (in the inner world). Until we have achieved it, at least we should exercise it as much as possible, and act consciously, knowing that our actions affect others, members of humanity, of which I am a part.
This call for Celebration of an International Day of Peace was based on the idea of becoming UNITED throughout the world, and at least for a day, bypassing our differences.
“…it is I who determine the nature and meaning of my relationship to those circumstances. In so doing, I create my own unique experience (and thus my own version) of what I call "reality."”
This is an invitation to be together behaving as though we understand that we are ONE (Although the real unity may take longer to be a reality inside us).
Will world Peace mean we must become aware of our UNITY?
(Article Number 1 of the Declaration of Human Rights calls to “treat others in a spirit of brotherhood (“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”))
What can you do to work toward Peace on the planet? (In your house, your neighborhood, your city, your country) What is the origin of violence? Should we do something about it?
“The word "individual" means "undivided." We are, as individuals, no more divided from the cosmic whole than are multiple yet individual whirlpools that share the same river.”
“There is no separation from the cosmic wholeness that many call "God," other than an experience of belief in such separation”.
The only real freedom we have is to decide on what side we are going to be: accepting being one with the whole, or thinking of myself as an isolated one.
“My power to choose (and re-choose) what and how I believe is the power of dominion over my life, the power of mindful self-dominion, which is to live my life by my own choosing rather than according to unconsciously or unwillingly adopted choices that are made for me by my parents, siblings and other relatives, by my teachers, by my employer, by my spouse, by my religion, etc.”
“When Mohandas Gandhi’s wife was asked how he was able to deliver his long, well thought-out speeches without notes, she observed, "You and I, we think one thing, say another, and do a third. With Gandhiji, it's all the same."”

Message from Buddhist monk for International Peace Day 2005
May You be peaceful, happy, and light in body and spirit. May You be safe and free from injury. May You be free from anger, afflictions, fear, and anxiety. May You learn to look at yourself with the eyes of understanding and love. May You be able to recognize and touch the seeds of joy and happiness in yourself. May You learn to identify and see the sources of anger, craving, and delusion in yourself. May You know how to nourish the seeds of joy in yourself every day. May You be able to live fresh, solid, and free. May You be free from attachment and aversion, but not be indifferent. I pray for a more friendly, more caring, and more understanding HUMAN FAMILY on this planet. To all who dislike suffering, who cherish lasting happiness - This is my heartfelt appeal. Om Mani Padme Hum!!!
All for the Buddha Dharma and World Peace,

Turkish President
Ahmet Necdet Sezer
ANKARA - Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer issued a message on the occasion of September 1st International Day of Peace.
In his message, Sezer said, ''besides war and armed struggles, terrorism, which ignores human life and aims to cause fear, intimidation and desperation in the society and targets innocent people, is the biggest obstacle before the peaceful atmosphere we are longing for.''
Sezer noted that the armament race continued in the world. However, he stressed, ''the world should give a helping hand to millions of people who are facing hunger, poverty and epidemics, and allocate its resources to rehabilitate living conditions of these people, and express concern over the continuation of armament race''.
''Since the foundation of the Republic, Turkey has supported the idea of solution of all international disputes through mutual respect, tolerance and dialogue, and calls on the international community to be in solidarity and cooperation to assure regional peace and stability,'' said Sezer.
Sezer wished that peace, love and tolerance would be adopted as a modus vivendi and people would live in a world in which there was no war, violence, fight, anger or massacre.
On the other hand, Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc also celebrated the International Day of Peace by issuing a message. In his message, Arinc said, ''longing for peace is not sufficient. It is both a humane and ethical responsibility to exert efforts for the settlement of peace and justice.''
